Menthol , a cyclic terpene alcohol found in mint ( Mentha spp .), can induce a pleasant cooling sensation when used in moderate concentrations. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown the analgesic and muscle-relieving effects of this substance.

Red Tiger Balm is the most popular. It contains camphor (11%), menthol (10%), clove oil (5%), and cajuput oil (7%), as well as cinnamon oil, dementholized peppermint oil, paraffin, and petrolatum.
